Import historical Slack data

This article shows you how to export Slack workspace messages and upload the export file to the eComms SFTP location for archiving and surveillance.

For Workspace Owners. Only Workspace Owners can export workspace data from Slack.

Before you begin

  • Confirm you are a Slack Workspace Owner or have permission to request the export from a Workspace Owner.

  • Confirm the date range you need to export.

  • Confirm the eComms SFTP location is available.

  • Available export options depend on your Slack plan and workspace permissions. Confirm your Slack plan supports data export before proceeding.

WARNING: Do not edit, rename, unzip, or repackage the Slack export file before uploading it. Modifying the file corrupts the integrity of the record and may affect your firm's ability to meet regulatory requirements.

Steps

  1. In Slack, click the Admin cog in the left navigation menu. The Admin menu opens.

  2. Click Data exports. The Export Data page opens.

  3. In Export date range, select the date range you need to export. Slack applies the selected range to the export request.

  4. Click Start Export. Slack begins preparing the export file.

  5. When Slack sends the export ready email to the Workspace Owner, use the download link in the email to download the export file.

  6. Upload the original, unmodified export file to the established eComms SFTP location. eComms processes the file and makes the messages available for archiving and surveillance.

Result

The Slack export file is available in the eComms SFTP location. Messages are processed and available for archiving and surveillance in accordance with your firm's policy and regulatory requirements.
