What are SMS sources?
SMS sources bring supported text message communications into MCO eComms so they can be retained, monitored, and reviewed according to your organization’s electronic communications policy.
Overview
Short Message Service (SMS) is commonly used for mobile text messaging between employees, clients, prospects, and other business contacts. These communications can include business records that compliance teams need to preserve and supervise.
MCO eComms supports SMS source capture so organizations can include supported text message communications in their electronic communications review program. SMS communications can be added to the archive and made available for monitoring, search, and review.
SMS capture depends on the mobile provider, source configuration, and data made available through the supported capture method. Your implementation or support contact can confirm which SMS content types are included for your environment.
How it works
Step | Description |
Confirm capture scope | Your organization confirms which SMS users, phone numbers, and communication types need to be captured. |
Configure the source | MCO or the implementation team configures the SMS source for your environment. |
Connect users | Phone numbers or other SMS identifiers are associated with the correct MCO eComms user profiles. |
Import communications | Supported SMS communications are brought into MCO eComms through the configured capture process. |
Archive messages | Captured SMS communications are added to the MCO eComms archive. |
Apply policies | Once communications are associated with users, retention and detection policies apply based on your organization’s configuration. |
Review communications | Compliance users can search, monitor, and review captured SMS communications in MCO eComms. |
User mapping
User mapping allows MCO eComms to associate captured SMS communications with the correct user profiles. SMS users are commonly mapped by phone number or another source-specific identifier.
If an SMS communication cannot be matched to a user profile, it may appear as unmapped until the required user mapping is completed.
Message availability
SMS communications may not appear in the archive immediately after setup is complete. Availability depends on the provider, source configuration, transfer method, and processing schedule.
After communications are imported and mapped, they can be retained and reviewed in MCO eComms according to the policies assigned to the user.
