Configure SMS capture for Verizon

This article shows you how to prepare the Verizon SMS provisioning details MCO needs to request SMS and MMS capture setup through TeleMessage.

For compliance administrators and mobile program administrators.

Before you begin

Confirm your organization meets the Verizon requirements for message archiving before you request onboarding.

  • Your organization has a business or enterprise account with Verizon.

  • You can sign in to Verizon’s Business Portal.

  • Your organization has an Enterprise Customer Profile Database (ECPD) profile set up with Verizon.

  • Your organization has chosen designated archive accounts linked to your ECPD profile.

  • SMS and MMS features are enabled on employee devices.

  • Your organization has agreed to Verizon’s terms and conditions to access archived messages.

  • A Mobile Directory Number (MDN) is enabled for the message archive service.

  • Text messaging and picture messaging are enabled for each MDN that requires capture.

  • The service is used only with approved accounts and customer-liable MDNs.

  • Messaging blocks are removed from all MDNs that need message capture.

NOTE: MCO coordinates all setup with TeleMessage and the mobile carrier.

Verizon SMS capture overview

Verizon SMS capture allows supported SMS and MMS communications from customer-liable Verizon mobile numbers to be archived for compliance review.

To start setup, your organization provides the required Verizon account and user details to MCO.

Employees do not need to install an application for Verizon SMS capture. Capture is provisioned through Verizon, TeleMessage, and MCO based on the approved mobile numbers.

Capture limitations

Enhanced messaging services are not captured through Verizon message archiving.

Messaging type

Capture support

SMS

Supported when the MDN is provisioned and SMS is enabled.

MMS

Supported when the MDN is provisioned and MMS is enabled.

iMessage

Not captured through Verizon message archiving.

RCS

Not captured through Verizon message archiving.

WARNING: Message archiving does not start for an MDN until messaging blocks are removed. MDNs may receive opt-in messages even when an SMS or MMS block exists, but capture will not begin until the block is removed.

Confirm the Verizon account setup

Before submitting users for capture, confirm the Verizon account is ready for onboarding.

Submit setup details to MCO

Verizon opt-in process

After MCO processes the request, Verizon may take up to 24 hours to finish adding the customer information.

After Verizon completes setup, Verizon automatically sends an opt-in text message to the provisioned MDNs. The message notifies users that their mobile number has been added to the Verizon message archiving service.

Each user must reply YES to confirm enrollment. After the user confirms, Verizon sends a message confirming that the device is provisioned for message archiving.

NOTE: By signing up for the service, users agree to the Verizon Message Archiving service limitations and terms and conditions.

Map users in MCO eComms

After provisioning is complete, users must be mapped in MCO eComms so captured Verizon SMS and MMS communications can be associated with the correct user profiles.

SMS users are typically mapped by mobile number.

  1. Sign in to MCO eComms as an administrator.

  2. Go to Settings > Users.

  3. Locate the user you need to map.

  4. Click Edit.

  5. Locate the Sources section.

  6. Click Edit in the Sources section.

  7. Click Add Source.

  8. In Source name, select the SMS source used for Verizon SMS capture.

  9. In Unique Identifier, enter the user’s mobile number.

  10. Click the check icon.

  11. Click Save.

Result

After Verizon SMS capture is provisioned and users are mapped in MCO eComms, captured SMS and MMS communications are associated with the correct user profiles and reviewed according to your organization’s configured policies and license limitations.
