WhatsApp Messenger (WhatsApp) is a popular instant messaging service by Meta. Since 2020, over 2 billion users leverage their mobile, desktop, and web applications to send end-to-end encrypted communications to both individuals and groups. The end-to-end encryption is a key feature that makes WhatsApp highly secure and private.

The same features that make it popular make it very challenging for organizations to ensure regulatory compliance. This complexity leads many organizations to declare WhatsApp an unapproved communication service.

Using standard WhatsApp applications users are asked to connect their account as a linked device using a QR Code. Once connected, messages are automatically captured in a parallel web session.

Each WhatsApp app on a device may only be configured to a single phone number. Therefore, if users want to separate their personal communications from business communications, they can install a separate app, WhatsApp Business, and configure only that one for capture.

Using a separately installed version of the WhatsApp Messenger app, any communications over this app are automatically captured. This app, which runs on both Android and iOS devices, requires no user intervention to configure beyond installation.

Organizations typically choose to use Mobile Device Management software to remotely manage installation and updates. However, the app can also be installed individually on the target devices.
